PhD Positions in Computational Mechanics at the University of Vermont
Two fully-funded Ph.D. student positions are available in the Computational Mechanics Group in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at the University of Vermont under the guidance of Dr. Lampros Svolos. The desired start date is mid-January (Spring 2024).
We are seeking highly motivated and talented candidates to join our research group and contribute to the development of novel and efficient numerical techniques at the intersection of mechanics and applied mathematics, with applications to the following problems:
- Modeling the effects of fire on steel infrastructure components
- Multiphysics modeling of hydraulic fracture during glacier calving
- Efficiently solving multiscale problems with machine learning
Required Qualifications:
- B.Sc. degree in Engineering or Applied Mathematics (or a relevant field),
- Very strong mathematical background (e.g., linear algebra, differential equations),
- Programming experience with Python or C++ for scientific applications.
Desired Qualifications:
- M.Sc. degree in Engineering or a relevant field,
- Strong background in Computational Mechanics (e.g., Finite Element Method for solid and
structural mechanics) or Applied Mathematics (e.g., numerical analysis/methods for partial
differential equations), - Experience in running simulations on high-performance computing (HPC) clusters (Computations will be performed on the Vermont Advanced Computing Center – VACC).
All applicants for graduate studies at the University of Vermont (UVM) are required to submit their applications online (see instructions here). However, the interested applicants are highly encouraged to first contact Dr. Lampros Svolos before submitting an application.
If you have a keen interest in Computational Mechanics, send your CV, recent publications (if any), and transcripts to Lampros.Svolos@uvm.edu. Additional information about the Graduate Program in CEE Department at UVM that leads to a Ph.D. degree can be found here.
Application deadline: November 1, 2023 (GRE Tests are not required)
